In the quiet suburb of Greenvale, New York, resides the unmistakable quad-headlight face of a 1985 Ford Mustang GT.
Owned by Michael Escobar for over two decades, this Bright Atlantic Blue Fox-body is more than just a car; it’s a statement, a throwback, and a personal passion project rooted in nostalgia and precision.
Michael picked up the Mustang back in 1998 after spotting it in a local newspaper ad. It was clean, well-priced, and exactly what he had been looking for—especially after parting with a previous black ’85 GT earlier in the ’90s. The chance to own another four-eye Mustang, a model he had always loved, was too good to pass up.
Just a month after buying it, the GT was resprayed in Bright Atlantic Blue—a color that gives it a striking, modern flair while maintaining a factory-style vibe. From there, Michael carefully curated a build that stayed true to the spirit of the original, while integrating era-correct upgrades and parts aligned with a distinct Ford Motorsport theme.
Underneath, the car benefits from Maximum Motorsports suspension components that greatly improve its handling, while a Bassani stainless steel X-pipe ensures it sounds as aggressive as it looks. Genuine Mavromont Industries PonyR wheels provide the perfect stance, and a slew of period-correct Ford Motorsport touches give the car its unique identity.
But what truly sets this build apart is the interior. Michael is especially proud of his Ford Motorsport seats and matching interior components—rare finds that perfectly complement the car’s overall vision. It’s the kind of detail that earns nods from enthusiasts and judges alike.
Most of the maintenance is handled by Michael himself, though for bigger jobs he relies on trusted professionals. Shoutouts go to Realspeed Automotive, Mavromont Industries, and of course, the Ford Motorsport brand that inspires so much of the build.
This Mustang isn’t just built to sit pretty. It’s a frequent participant in local shows and meets, and it’s made multiple appearances at the Carlisle Ford Nationals—Michael’s favorite event. The car has earned multiple first-place awards there, along with several Best in Show trophies at local events. It even made its magazine debut in 5.0 & Super Fords back in March 2007.
Despite being a weekend toy and garage queen, the Mustang still drives like new. Michael says it’s a thrill every time he rows through the gears. “It still runs and performs like it did decades ago,” he says. “It never gets old.” Friends and family have come to associate the car with him, and their support only amplifies the joy it brings.
Of course, owning a classic in New York isn’t without its challenges. Finding affordable garage space is always a battle, but for Michael, keeping the GT safe and preserved is non-negotiable. It’s been worth it, especially for the memorable road trips—like the repeated cruises down to Carlisle with fellow Mustang fans.
Looking ahead, Michael doesn’t plan to change much. A possible upgrade to 17x10 wheels in the rear might be on the horizon, but the car is otherwise complete. If budget were no object, he’d add a Blue F-150 Raptor to the garage, using it to tow the Mustang to out-of-state shows in style.
This build was heavily inspired by his previous ’85 GT, and it’s clear that Michael has not only recaptured the magic of that first car, but elevated it. His advice to others considering a similar path is simple: “Start with a clean car. It makes everything easier and sets a solid foundation for your vision.”
You can follow his journey on Instagram @escogt85, and if you’re lucky, spot the Atlantic Blue Mustang at a local event or alongside his crew from Mid Atlantic Four Eyes & SVOs. Because in the world of Fox-body Mustangs, the build is half the fun—but the community is what makes it unforgettable.
