Ford shocked the world by developing a large-displacement, pushrod engine for its 2020 F250 Super Duty pickups. Instantly, Blue Oval fans dreamt of the swapping the 7.3-liter engine, nicknamed Godzilla, into their project cars. Now enthusiasts can realize that dream, courtesy of the new 7.3L V8 Ford crate engine from Ford Performance.
“The 7.3-liter is designed for maximum durability in the harshest environments, given that our customers live, and work in these conditions every day,” Joel Beltramo, Ford manager for gas V8 engines, said when the engine debuted in the big trucks. “This engine has the largest displacement in its class and is designed to provide benefits in key areas like power, durability, ease of maintenance and total operating costs.”
Built with features like large main bearings, a forged-steel crankshaft, piston-cooling jets, and a variable-displacement oil pump, this engine presents a tantalizing engine-swap proposition for those wanting something other than a Coyote 5.0-liter.
