As automakers embrace electric propulsion, the next frontier is electric restomods.
While there are already companies converting classic machines into EVs, the next frontier is the do-it-yourself conversion, and Ford Performance is supporting those efforts with a literal crate motor sourced from the potent 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT.
“A tease for you: An electric crate motor for your restomod or project,” the factory hot rodders announced on social media. “We call it the ‘Eluminator.’ Available this fall — watch out for more at The SEMA Show.”
Delivering 281 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, this single electric motor is already more potent than the most powerful Fox Mustang delivered by the factory. The 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra rolled off the dealer lot with 235 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Putting one or two Eluminators in a lightweight Fox Mustang would certainly make for a fun ride.
While details are scarce, we assume Ford Performance will offer supporting hardware —battery packs, controllers, inverters and wiring — to round out such a swap. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Ford Performance showcase a project car or two with this gear at the show, so we look forward to seeing what comes next from this product line.
